Halloween-aholic

by Staff on October 26, 2010

My name is Brittany and I am a Halloween-aholic. I love everything dark and spooky, and spent most of my childhood consulting the Ouija board and spinning around in dark bathrooms chanting “Bloody Mary.” When my housemate and I moved into our new place Junior year of college, she wisely suggested “Let’s decorate for Halloween and never take it down.” So it is only appropriate that my first holiday here at Bookshop is also my favorite.

I’ve taken the liberty of transforming the Cards & Gifts section into a horrifying delight, complete with bats, skulls, witches and blood. So hop on your broomstick, climb through the spiderwebs and inspect the new Halloween products I’ve so painstakingly arranged.

My favorite, hands down, is a daily fortune projection titled Horrorscopes: A Little Book of Misfortunes from Chronicle Books. If you are hosting a haunted party, make sure to grab a Vampire-Fang ice cube tray from Fred. Add red food coloring to the water before you pour it into the trays, and the fangs will look quite creepy floating in your beverage of choice. And make sure your keys are appropriately dressed for the holiday with Freakeys, monster covers that help differentiate the house key from the key to your underground catacombs.

If you are venturing into my neck of the woods, come prepared: Bring a friend if you’ll need a hand to hold, or comfort yourself with the adorable vintage-inspired Hallows Eve cards from Found Image. Or to conceal your fear, dress up in your costume so no one will recognize the fool screaming in the card section. Either way, hurry in before it’s too late–for unlike my old house in Seabright, the Halloween decorations won’t last the whole year long!

Saying Goodbye–and Hello!

A message from Maryse:

August 28th was my last day at Bookshop Santa Cruz as the sidelines buyer. For the past six years, books and cards and gifts have been my passion, and I have so enjoyed being part of the Bookshop family, and of our larger community of book lovers in Santa Cruz. I started out as a cashier, moved on to working on the floor, then to buying used books and helping in fiction, and, finally, spent the last three years delighting you all with fabulous cards and sundries. I have learned a lot, met so many wonderful people, and, most notably, spent a lot of Bookshop’s money on things I thought you might like. As I make a new life for myself in sunny Chicago I know I will miss Bookshop more than a vegan misses cheese pizza, and I hope I will be missed even more.

But all is not lost—we have found an amazing young lady to replace me, and I am certain she will carry on in the fashion we have all become accustomed to. Brittany comes from Hart’s Fabric, where she was a buyer, and she is a supremely creative, bright, and dedicated creature. I am happy to know that I will be leaving the gift section in such capable hands, and I know that it will only improve in her care.

So goodbye, dear Bookshop friends, and please do stop in to say hello and welcome Brittany to the family—and thank you for making my years here so very wonderful.
